2005 European Championships

Paralympic champion Isabel Newstead has secured another medal, this time at the European Shooting Championships in Poland.

Newstead improved on her own qualifying round world record to an impressive 378 in the the SH1 Air Pistol competition. She went on to win the final round with a score of 473.5, just short of her record of 474.6, beating Macedonia's Olivera Nakovska Birkova by 4.9 points.

Newstead's performances were enough to give her both European and Open gold medals to add to her Paralympic and World titles.

"I am getting better, but I know I have got to raise the bar considerably," 50-year-old from Harlow in Essex. "I need to be looking at what the Chinese and the Koreans will produce at Beijing in 2008." Newstead, who eclipsed her own record of 376 that she set in winning gold at the Sydney Paralympics in 2000, aims to complete an air pistol hat-trick in Beijing

Fellow Briton Di Coates won GB's only other medal, securing a bronze in the SH1 Air rifle competition. She scored 386 in qualification but could only manage a disapointing 98.4 in the final.

GB newcomers Nathan Milgate (R1 Air Rifle) and Chris Summerscales (P1 Air Pistol) achieved minimum qualifying scores. Both Rikki Singh (P1 Pistol) and Terry Nelson (R4,R5 Rifle) also had impressive scores on there international debuts.
